Fire

A FIRE ALARM is an alarm that goes off IN THE BUILDING. It is a shrill alarm accompanied by flashing lights in most locations. In the case of a FIRE ALARM – you will EVACUATE THE BUILDING, as follows:

  1.  Calmly proceed to the nearest exit.
  2.  Do not use the elevators.
  3.  Take your personal belongings if possible.
  4.  Assist those who need help, if possible.
  5.  Once outside, congregate at Stewart Center 1st Floor, East entrance (up the stairs from the Union).
  6.  Stay at the Stewart Center until instructed to leave.
  7.  Obey all emergency personnel.

Shelter in Place

A SHELTER IN PLACE ALARM is an alarm that goes off OUTSIDE THE BUILDING. It is a siren/horn. In the case of a SHELTER IN PLACE ALARM – you will REMAIN IN THE BUILDING, as follows:

  1.  Move to a room or hallway in the basement of the building.
  2.  The basement is accessed through the center stairwell from the first floor of Grissom.
  3.  Do not use the elevators.
  4.  Take your personal belongings if possible.
  5.  Assist those who need help, if possible.
  6.  Stay in the shelter location until instructed to leave.
  7.  Obey all emergency personnel.

Other Emergencies

If there is an EMERGENCY IN THE CLASSROOM, dial 911 using the classroom phone and obey the instructions of emergency personnel – STAY ON THE PHONE UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO OTHERWISE.

A FIRE OR CHEMICAL RELEASE may cause a fire alarm. An INTRUDER, a TORNADO, or a TERRORIST ACT may cause a SHELTER IN PLACE alarm.
