Kossi Loic M. Avegnon earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 2017 from University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa, Ghana, and is currently a PhD student in mechanical engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). A graduate research assistant in the Nebraska Engineering Additive Technologies (NEAT) Lab, he has conducted research on metal additive manufacturing for the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and NASA. Through the private-public education partnership University Hub, he has provided remote learning opportunities on solid modeling to underserved students from Ghana. He has served as an instructor of unmanned aerial vehicles for the Ghanaian Army and lectured on drone components, safety, flight mechanics, maintenance, and drone defense. The lead designer and co-founder of the startup Klaks Technologies Ltd., he built the first polymer 3D printer from electronic waste in West Africa. In 2018, was invited to the Ghana-British Council Innovation Exhibition, where he presented on electronic waste manufacturing to the president of Ghana. He has in-depth expertise in hybrid additive manufacturing (AM), machining, materials characterization, and mechanical testing. He plans to pursue new patents in frugal manufacturing and hybrid AM and accordingly create new startup companies. As a professor, he hopes to inspire more black students to pursue engineering careers – specifically in advanced manufacturing technology.
