Sanjay G. Rao

Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Sanjay G. Rao joined the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University as an Assistant Professor in January 2005. His research interests are in Networking, Distributed Systems, and Internet Architecture and Protocols. He received the Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and the Ph.D from the School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University in 2004.

Sanjay's research has been on enabling the pervasive deployment of high-bandwidth applications such as broadcasting and audio/video conferencing on the Internet. He wrote the first published paper that argued for a self-organizing overlay approach to multicast, contrary to the then widely prevailing view in the research and industrial community that multicast was best supported at the IP layer (IP Multicast). He played a leadership role in the design of a broadcasting system based on overlay multicast, which is in regular operational use today and has been used by several thousand people. At Purdue, Sanjay plans to continue his research in overlay networks and multimedia applications, as well as initiate research in areas such as Security, and Self-Managing Systems.
