William J. Peine

Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering

Dr. William J. Peine researches medical robotics, haptic interfaces, and virtual reality at Purdue's School of Mechanical Engineering. He received his B.S. (cum laude) in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. (1999) in Applied Sciences from Harvard. He spent the next 5 years in industry with endoVia Medical (Mgr., Electro-Mechanical Systems Development for Laprotek, a high dexterity, teleoperated surgical robotic system), Virtual Ink Corporation (Senior Engineer, for development of mimio®, an ultrasonic based electronic whiteboard system and also for bringing up production line in China), and Pressure Profile Systems, Inc. (co-founder and Manager of Systems Engineering for startup designing and manufacturing measurement systems for medical and industrial markets using novel distributed pressure and contact sensor technology, including SBIR/NIH support). He has been involved in teaching of fluid mechanics and engineering design, and received the best technical poster presentation award at the Sixth International Meeting of the Society for Minimally Invasive Therapy. In addition, for one product Bill and his colleagues received the Good Design Award (Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design), Best of Show Award (Macworld Expo 2001), and Best Hardware Product (VARVision 2000).
