Kaushik Roy, the Edward G. Tiedemann Jr. Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering, will receive the 2020 Arden L. Bement Jr. Award for significant accomplishments in pure and applied science and engineering. Roy’s work exploits nanoscale electronic devices to achieve functionality analogous to biological neurons and synapses with the potential for improvements in the energy efficiency and compactness of computing hardware. He is being honored for pioneering and field-defining research across neuromorphic (brain-inspired) computing devices, circuits and algorithms.

The Arden L. Bement Jr. Award was established in 2015 by Distinguished Professor Emeritus Arden Bement and his wife, Mrs. Louise Bement. The award is the most prestigious given by the university in pure and applied science and engineering. This is the third straight year the award has gone to a member of the ECE faculty. Evgenii Narimanov received the award in 2019, and Peide Ye received it in 2018.

Jay Akridge, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and diversity, has announced Purdue's Morrill Award winners for 2020.

The Morrill Award was initiated in 2012 to honor the Morrill Act of 1862, which allowed for the establishment of land-grant colleges and universities. The award is the highest honor that Purdue confers on a member of its faculty and comes with a $30,000 prize, which may be used as discretionary funds or salary supplement. Each year, the Office of the Provost selects up to three Morrill Award recipients based on the recommendations of a selection committee composed of distinguished members of the Purdue faculty.

The 2020 Morrill Award winners are Kenneth Ferraro, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, College of Liberal Arts, and Supriyo Datta, the Thomas Duncan Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering.
