IE’s Caldwell to be inducted as IISE fellow
Barrett S. Caldwell, professor and interim head of the School of Industrial Engineering, has been selected to receive the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE) Fellow Award.
He will be inducted during the IISE Annual Conference & Expo, held May 21-24 in Seattle.
“Being named a fellow of IISE is an especially meaningful award to me. I have been the faculty advisor for the Purdue IISE student chapter for the past four years, and on the faculty at Purdue since 2000,” Caldwell said. “Since I have been here, I have frequently heard people of IISE speak about how important Purdue as a university is to the discipline of industrial engineering. In fact, three of the top IISE national awards are all named for Purdue folks: Lillian Gilbreth, Alan Pritsker and Jim Barany. It’s particularly gratifying that I can accept this award of fellow as a member of the Purdue IE faculty.”
Caldwell has a courtesy appointment in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics and has served as director of the NASA Indiana Space Grant Consortium since 2002. His research team, the Group Performance Environments Research (GROUPER) Laboratory, examines and improves how people successfully get, share and use information in high-consequence settings, including aviation, critical incident response, healthcare, and spaceflight operations.
A fellow is the highest classification of IISE membership, and no more than 20 fellows are named each year. To be considered, nominees must demonstrate outstanding accomplishments in both their professional career and service to industrial and systems engineering.
