Election to the IAA is a recognition of an individual’s record of service and achievement, and Members are leaders in space and aeronautical activities in their own countries, its website said.

The Academy is arranged in four sections that reflect the IAA major disciplines: Basic sciences, engineering sciences, life sciences and social sciences. In 2018, Howell was elected as a Corresponding Member in engineering sciences. In the recent new election, she was elected by peers in the Academy to permanent status as a Member in engineering sciences. Membership brings with it the commitment to work with fellow members for the betterment of mankind through the application of the art and science of astronautics, the IAA website said.

The IAA Board of Trustees has a tradition of presenting diplomas to new Members during Academy Days. With a modified schedule due to COVID-19, Members will be recognized either at a dinner in March 2021 in Paris or at Academy Day in October 2021 in Dubai.

Founded in 1960, the IAA is a non-government organization of experts committed to expanding the frontiers of space, according to its website. Its membership consists of individuals who have distinguished themselves in one of the field of astronautics or one of the branches of science of fundamental importance for the exploration of space.
