Episode 5 - Soaring High

A Purdue staff member passionately champions women’s contributions to engineering and we highlight a Purdue alumnus who co-created a flight communication training app.

This episode of This is Purdue features Beth Holloway, Assistant Dean for Diversity and Engagement for the College of Engineering at Purdue University and Leah H. Jamieson Director of Women in Engineering. Beth discusses how she came to Purdue University to become a mechanical engineer and how she passionately champions women’s contributions to engineering. She now encourages current Purdue engineering students. This episode also features the story of Muharrem Mane, a Purdue alumnus that created a flight communication training app. The app, PlaneEnglish teaches new pilots and students the important communication skills needed when interacting with other pilots, their crew, and air traffic control.

Beth was inspired by her father and his perception of engineers. She wanted to have an impact on society and watch her ideas come to life through engineering. Now she believes that her students desire the same impact. Every day, through her work at Purdue, Beth uses her passion for impactful engineering through encouraging diversity and inclusion. She states a person's diversity of thought and background have the ability to expand a set of solutions. As the director of Women in Engineering, Beth’s mission is to enrich the industry of engineering through the participation of women.

Next, Muharrem Mane shares the details of his app, PlaneEnglish, and the reason it was created. During his experience as an exchange student from Albania, Muharrem grew a love for aviation. As he was preparing to become a pilot, he discovered a need for better training to successfully communicate with other pilots, their crew, and air traffic control. Now his app, PlaneEnglish, teaches students the unique terminology necessary for piloting, and creates real-life simulations based on high traffic airports, and gives feedback to students.
