Nuclear Science and Technology Challenges

William D. Magwood

Mr. William D. Magwood, IV, the Director General of the Paris-based Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), a multilateral agency with 33 member countries representing the most advanced nuclear safety, science, and technology infrastructures in the world, will review his impressions of the most important lessons from Fukushima Daiichi and other nuclear disasters and what these lessons tell us about nuclear energy and its future as a major energy source in the long-term future. He will consider the international reaction to the 3/11 accident and how regulators have adapted to the changed environment, how public expectations have changed, how different nuclear safety philosophies are developing in different parts of the world, and what may be the most important elements in enabling a global nuclear energy future.
