Daniels, manufacturing leaders to speak on Midwest economic development

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —Purdue President Mitch Daniels and leaders from some of the top U.S. manufacturers will be among the speakers at a National Academy of Engineering regional meeting on economic development.

The symposium, Economic Development Through Technology: Manufacturing in the Midwest, will be from 1-6 p.m. Thursday (April 24) at the Kurz Technology Center in Purdue Research Park. It is free and open to the public.

Daniels will speak at 2:25 p.m. on "Indiana and the Manufacturing Economy."

Other topics on the agenda range from aviation to pharmaceuticals to batteries.

Scheduled speakers include John Wall, Cummins Inc. vice president and chief technical officer; Terence Beezhold, vice president and chief project engineer, 777X, Boeing Commercial Airplanes; Dean Bartles, executive director, Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute, University of Illinois LABS; Ann Marie Sastry, Sakti3 president and chief executive officer; Sanjay Correa, GE Aviation vice president, CMC operations; Bret Huff, Eli Lilly and Co. vice president, small molecule design and development; and Leah Jamieson, the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering.

Byron Pipes, the John L. Bray Distinguished Professor of Engineering and lead organizer of the symposium, will give opening remarks along with NAE President Dan Mote.

A panel will discuss the future of manufacturing in the Midwest beginning at 5:05 p.m.
