Purdue Engineering wins inaugural Impact Award

Exxon Mobile Corp. and NSBE, the National Society of Black Engineers, have named Purdue and two other universities as the first winners of their Impact Award in recognition of success in retaining underrepresented minority students enrolled in engineering programs. More than 17 universities were considered, and Purdue shares the honor with the University of Texas at Austin and Virginia Tech.

Each of the winning universities was given $10,000 from ExxonMobil and NSBE to strengthen their minority recruitment and retention programs. All the recipients were honored April 13 at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, DC.

Truman Bell, Exxon Mobile Corp.'s senior program officer for education and diversity, said In a letter to Leah Jamieson, the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering: "We cannot afford to discourage any bright minds, regardless of their backgrounds, and Purdue is helping make a difference through the "Academic Boot Camp," and various diversity workshops."
