Monica Cox, associate professor of engineering education, has been selected to serve as interim statewide director of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation program in Indiana.

LSAMP, a National Science Foundation program, aims to increase the number of underrepresented students successfully completing science, technology, engineering and mathematics undergraduate programs, as well as to increase the number of these students who enter STEM graduate programs and occupations.

In her new role, Cox is responsible for communicating with alliance campus directors from Indiana University, Indiana State, Ball State, Purdue West Lafayette, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Purdue North Central, Purdue Calumet and Indiana University Northwest. She will oversee budgets and track metrics and LSAMP efforts across each campus.

Also, Cox, who has worked with teams of multidisciplinary researchers to earn over $5 million in research funding, will lead grant writing for the Phase III project.

"We're excited to have someone of her stature and with her track record leading this important initiative for the statewide alliance," says Christine Taylor, vice provost for diversity and inclusion. "While Dr. Cox is fairly new to her position, there is already evidence that she will introduce innovative ideas and initiatives to the alliance as we work toward our collective goal of diversifying the STEM disciplines and workforce."

The Phase II project ends May 2012, and the grant application for Phase III will be submitted in October 2011. If funding for Phase III is established, Cox will work with alliance administration to define her role within the new project.
