Engineers working in an interconnected world require skill sets that can simultaneously develop innovative technologies and new abilities to overcome engineering challenges. As engineering educators, we must ensure that our graduates are prepared for reflective design practice that actively advances both design solutions and personal learning. In this seminar, we will explore outcomes appropriate for reflective practice in engineering design and discuss instructional methods and assessments to achieve these outcomes. We will also consider ways to use design reviews for formative and summative assessment and as models of engineering practice in quality conscious product development settings.

Dr. Denny Davis is Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering at Washington State University (WSU). He has been active in developing and testing instructional materials and assessments for engineering design and professional skills. He leads a diverse research team that created the Integrated Design Engineering Assessment and Learning System (IDEALS) that facilitates student reflection, assessment, and self-regulated learning in the context of team design projects. He is recipient of numerous teaching awards and was sole recipient of WSU’s Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award for Teaching in 1999 and Leadership in 2011. He is a Fellow in the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) since 2002
