Empowering Our People: Priorities for 2015/16
The first of the four goals indicated by our Strategic Compass is: Empower Our People. Stated in full from the original Strategic Plan this goal is "to empower all members of the School (students, professional, admin and clerical staff, recruiters, advisors, and faculty) in their diversity to each contribute to the success of our integrated, multi-faceted mission while achieving their individual professional goals".
For the coming year, 2015/16, I believe there are three priorities linked to this goal:
- Strengthen our sense of common purpose
- Develop a home room for MDE/IDES students
- Hire a new Head for ENE
Since becoming Head, I have worked diligently to foster a sense of common purpose across the three programmatic foci of ENE: First-Year Engineering, Multidisciplinary / Interdisciplinary Engineering and the Graduate program. These three facets of ENE have their own history and heritage that each deserves to be celebrated. However our real strength comes from the unique combination of all three facets: a case of the whole being much greater than the sum of the parts.
Now that the operations of ENE are distributed between Armstrong Hall and Wang Hall, we need to ensure that this physical separation does not lead to a sense of separate identities along programmatic lines. Also as we continue to grow, as has happened over recent years, it is imperative that we strive to learn about what others do across ENE. We should proactively explore ways that we can build an even stronger sense of common purpose through forging deeper social and professional interactions across the school, regardless of our primary programmatic role or purpose.
The opening of our new research laboratory in Wang Hall has freed up space in ARMS 1337 previously used for ENE graduate students. This has provided an opportunity to create a “home room” for the undergraduate students in Multidisciplinary Engineering and Interdisciplinary Engineering Studies. Given that most of these students have unique, individual plans of study, having a place of their own where they can meet other students in the program has been a pressing need. Up until now they have never had such a place, something that students in other UG programs often take for granted.
The new space will be open for students this fall. Mary Pilotte, Director of the MDE/IDES program, and Chris Pekny who advises these students are moving into the two side offices in ARMS 1337. Their move frees up much needed office space for the two new FYE advisors we hired in May. We have used this opportunity to also upgrade some computers.
It goes without saying that a critical priority for 2015/16 is to identify and hire a suitable person to be the next Head of ENE. This decision will have a major impact upon the next phase in the short history of ENE. As such this process presents a major opportunity to empower this community in helping to shape the future of ENE.
The coming year is an ideal time for the whole ENE community to take stock by reflecting on what has been achieved thus far and by considering the many opportunities ahead. Through collectively imagining preferred futures, this community can proactively influence the profile of the pool of candidates who are encouraged to apply for the headship. In addition, everyone can take an active role in the selection process, whether you are on the search committee or not.
By engaging fully in this critical decision we can all have a major say in determining what happens here over the next five or ten years.

New Student Induction Ceremony
Faculty are invited to participate in an important event in the lives of the incoming undergraduate class for this fall. The New Student Induction Ceremony is designed to formally welcome the new class and induct them into the Purdue student body. This brief ceremony is a high-energy, high-engagement event with a reflection of the commencement ceremony that they all will experience four years later. We ask faculty and University leadership to wear academic regalia as part of the reflection of commencement for these students. The 6,000 students in Boiler Gold Rush will attend along with as many as 8,000 parents and other guests of these students. Because of the size of the event, it will be held in Mackey Arena. The ceremony itself lasts less than 30 minutes and consists of a faculty processional, music, short speeches by University and student leadership and faculty recessional. Although brief, it is a very impactful event for students their families. The particulars are:

- Time: 4:00 pm (faculty arrival/robing at 3:15 pm)
- Attire: Academic Regalia. Our preference is that faculty wear their own regalia from their degree granting institutions. If you need academic regalia, we might be able to borrow some from the commencement office, but their supply is very limited so unfortunately we may not be able to fulfill every request.

...to the STAR First-Year Engineering Advisor team for their extraordinary commitment to our incoming First-Year Engineering students and their families. By the end of STAR last Friday the team had met with, and advised, approximately 1315 new FYE students in person. This team includes not only the regular FYE Advisor team, Billi, Paul, Rose, Nate, Kelly, Jeff, Sarah, Suzanne, Laurie, Carlene and Melissa but also others from ENE and across the College including Chris Pekny (MDE/IDE), Holly Englert (ME), Elizabeth Allum (IE), and Carol Powell (Temporary Advisor).
In addition to advising these 1315 students who come on campus for a day to register for classes, the team are working with 126 students who have been granted a “STAR Exception” (students who are domestic), plus 359 students (international students) who are not able to attend but are being advised online as part of "virtual-STAR" (v-STAR) . So while the on campus STAR ended on July 10, our regular FYE advisor team will still be very busy over coming weeks advising many students via v-STAR. In addition they will be communicating with new admits who now have questions concerning their schedule, as well as auditing our continuing students who have been engaged in attending summer school. In addition to Billi Jennings responds to frequent parent questions via email, phone, and through Face Book.

NSF Restricted-Access Research Data Centers (RDCs) This solicitation invites proposals for the establishment of new Research Data Centers (RDCs). RDCs are secure Census Bureau facilities within which external researchers are given access to confidential micro data in accordance with specific statutory requirements. Deadline: September 30
DoD-DARPA Defense Sciences Office (DSO) Office-wide BAA The mission of the DARPA DSO is to identify and pursue high-risk, high-payoff research initiatives across a broad spectrum of science and engineering disciplines and to transform these initiatives into important, radically new, game-changing technologies for U.S. national security. In support of this mission, this DSO Office-wide BAA invites proposers to submit innovative basic or applied research concepts in one or more of the following technical areas: Physical Systems; Mathematics, Modeling and Design; and Human-Machine Systems. Executive summaries accepted through 5/12/16; Abstracts accepted through 6/2/16; Proposals accepted through 7/2/16.
NIST Empirical Measurement of the Impact of Technology Transfer from Federal Laboratories NIST invites applications from eligible applicants to develop a data infrastructure of technology transfer activities across federal laboratories that can be used as a tool to empirically measure the economic impact of technology transfer activities from federal laboratories. Specifically, the awardee, in collaboration with NIST, will sponsor graduate and post-doctoral research; assess, define, and develop the data infrastructure and tools required to empirically measure the impact of technology transfer across the entire federal laboratory system; conduct systematic empirical analyses of technology transfer mechanisms across federal laboratories; conduct analyses to measure the economic impacts of technology transfer from federal laboratories; identify barriers to effective technology transfer from the federal laboratory system; and disseminate the data infrastructure, tools, and results of the analyses. Deadline: August 24.
NEH Digital Humanities Start-up Grant The Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants program awards relatively small grants to support the planning stages of digital projects that promise to benefit the humanities. The program supports both new projects in early stages of development and efforts to reinvigorate existing or dormant projects in innovative ways. Proposals should be for the planning or initial stages of digital initiatives in any area of the humanities. Deadline: September 16.

Purdue’s open limited submission competitions, limited submission policy, and templates for preproposals may be found at http://www.purdue.edu/research/funding-and-grant-writing/limited-submissions.php. For any case in which the number of preproposals received is no more than the number of proposals allowed by the sponsor, the EVPRP will notify the PI(s) that an internal competition will be unnecessary.
Limited Submission: NEH Dialogues on the Experience of War The program supports the study and discussion of important humanities sources about war, in the belief that these sources can help U.S. military veterans and others to think more deeply about the issues raised by war and military service. The humanities sources can be drawn from history, philosophy, literature, and film—and they may and should be supplemented by testimonials from those who have served. The discussions are intended to promote serious exploration of important questions about the nature of duty, heroism, suffering, loyalty, and patriotism. The program awards grants of up to $100,000 that will support: 1) the recruitment and training of discussion leaders; and 2.) following the training program, the convening of at least two discussion programs. For this opportunity, Purdue may submit only three applications.

NSF Dear Colleague Letter: Unsolicited Proposals for Quantitative Approaches to Biomedical Big Data (QuBBD) NSF's Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) aims to foster inter- and multi-disciplinary, exploratory collaborations by encouraging the submission of unsolicited proposals for small one-year planning grants (typically less than $100,000 in total costs per grant). We encourage collaborative proposals from new teams of researchers, representing the quantitative / computational sciences and the biomedical sciences, pursuing novel approaches to data challenges in precision medicine.
