Analyzing Video Data for Research without being Overwhelmed

Monica Cardella's ENE 595 class presentation: Lee Rynearson, Nicholas Fila, Brianna Dorie, Tamecia Jones, Antonette Cummings, Justin Hess, DeLean Tolbert & Anastasia Rynearson

Abstract:

If a picture is worth a thousand words, video data is worth millions of words and potentially hundreds of research hours. How do you make the most of your research time with video data? This presentation is based on the ENE 595 Social Construction of Knowledge: Analysis of Video Data class. From the syllabus:

Having a deep understanding of different research approaches, and knowing what types of questions can be answered with which methods, is a central part of what it means to be and become an engineering education professional. Dialogue around methodological choices and approaches and access to data sources facilitates the process of learning research approaches. In this course we will discuss the process of collecting and analyzing video data, and we will also practice the process of analyzing video data.

We will provide a short introduction on video collection setup and techniques, setting up a study with video data, how to sort through and analyze your data, and dissemination techniques for studies with video data.
