MSE community,
The ARMS atrium apparently had a heating failure, which led to the sprinklers in the atrium breaking. There has apparently been some water in the basement but it’s not clear if it’s over the entire basement or constrained to the part near the atrium.

This has led to the fire department needing to close the building today and they’ve said it will be closed tomorrow also, nobody is allowed to work/study in the building with the sprinkler’s not working for fire safety, everyone that is there has been told to leave. Repairs have started but ARMS will be closed for the remainder of today and tomorrow.

The dean of students will be sending a note to any students that have classes in ARMS so they know class is canceled.

For faculty, grad students, post-docs and staff based in ARMS that can work remotely, tomorrow is a work from home day. If you’re based in another building, it’s work as normal.

I’ll keep everyone updated as I get more information. If anyone was in the basement today/this morning please send me an email (don’t reply all) with any information you may have. For now, we’re anticipating the building being open on Wednesday.

Stay safe and warm please,
DFB
