MSE Safety & Equipment Newsletter for November/December 2019
**** Important Upcoming Dates ****
· Purdue Winter Recess, Dec. 23 through Jan. 1. Exercise caution when working in the lab during the recess as few (if any) personnel will be on campus to provide assistance.
**** MSE Lab Safety Blackboard Course Updates ****
· Guidance and links for Accident & Near-Miss reporting
Reminder: To self-enroll in this Blackboard course, click here<https://mycourses.purdue.edu/webapps/blackboard/execute/viewCatalog?id=&type=Course&command=NewSearch&moduleId=&searchField=CourseName&searchOperator=Contains&searchText=MSE+Lab+Safety&dateSearchOperator=LessThan&dateSearchDate_datetime=2019-9-4+15%3A46%3A00&pickdate=&pickname=&dateSearchDate_date=09%2F04%2F2019> .
**** Annual Safety Training Reminder ****
As described in the MSE safety training policy (posted here<https://engineering.purdue.edu/Intranet/Groups/Schools/MSE/Facilities/SafetyPolicies>), each academic year, all undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers are required to complete the MSE-specific safety training (slides & quiz) administered through Blackboard. A list of researchers who have/have not completed the training will be provided to Prof. Bahr and MSE faculty members at the end of the semester.
**** PPE Reminder ****
Physical and health hazards and the required PPE for each MSE lab space are posted on the lab’s main door. Required PPE typically includes impact-resistant safety glasses, long pants, closed-toed shoes, and, for CHP labs, a lab coat. To encourage PPE use, a “three-strike” infraction policy has been adopted, described below. For example, an infraction could be not wearing safety glasses in a lab space where safety glasses are required.
· First infraction: warning email with supervisor copied
· Second infraction: lab access temporarily suspended
· Third infraction: lab access permanently suspended
**** XRD Lab Clean-Up ****
Prof. Blendell and the Equipment Committee will be removing two old XRDs and other related equipment in the XRD lab (ARMS 2093). During this process, Prof. Blendell will label equipment, components, and other things as “to-go” by Monday, Dec 2nd. These items will then be sent to surplus or thrown away. Contact Prof. Blendell<mailto:blendell at purdue.edu> to inquire about specific items.
**** Mechanical Testing Equipment Update****
If you wish to use any of the following equipment, please make sure you receive training from Jenni Fifer<mailto:fiferj at purdue.edu> if you are not already trained; and please schedule your time with the equipment using the following Google Calendars:
