What the heck is a Parish?

In Louisiana, the term "Parish" is used to refer to what other states call "Counties." This is due to the heavy French influence in Louisiana, which has lived on into the present day. Our community partner for the Louisiana project, the Grand Caillou/Dulac Band of Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw, is located in Terrebonne parish, which in French means "the good earth!"
