All,

I wholeheartedly support this statement written by the students – and kudos to them for writing it!

Hopefully both the faculty and the graduate students on this list can share this with their respective departments and encourage their own departments to write similar statements.

I also want to make sure you’re all aware of Senate Resolution 16-01 which affirms the University’s non-discrimination policy and the rights of all people to be treated with dignity and respect. https://www.purdue.edu/senate/meetings/Senate%20Document%2016-01%20Resolution%20on%20Immigrants%20and%20International%20Members%20of%20the%20Purdue%20Community.pdf

There is a lot more work to be done.  And there are a lot of groups working on these efforts at Purdue but it will take all of us working in our classrooms, our research labs, and our departments to truly make a difference.

I support this but also wonder if there is an opportunity here to begin to be proactive in our communities to discuss issues about diversity and inclusiveness, especially addressing the fears of all including those who might be leaning to perpetuating divisions among various groups.

Below is a statement prepared by several ESE students last week. The PGSG can send it out on Wednesday in their regular announcement email. I would like to make sure everyone is OK with this coming from ESE as a whole. I will assume you support it unless you tell me otherwise. Thank you.

“We, the Ecological Sciences and Engineering (ESE) Interdisciplinary Graduate Program, wish to express our complete condemnation of groups that promote racism and hate on our campus. It is our belief that Purdue University benefits from a racially and culturally diverse student body, and nowhere is this truer than in ESE.
