Please see attached for the survey results for the topic of the 2017 Keystone Series. Standing Rock is the majority vote, and therefore, is what we will target. However, there are both water quality issues and political change impacts (which are within the proposed topics 2 and 3) that are part or may influence the Standing Rock situation. Therefore, it should be very easy within this topic to engage a larger town-n-gown community that includes the broader theme on energy-environment-climate issues and how the pipeline issues will play out under the new administration. The owners of the pipeline are emboldened and are highly optimistic that the project will be now quickly approved. What other environmental protections for the pipeline project, and more broadly, will be dismantled, with the new EPA leader (a climate denier)? So Standing Rock is a perfect current case study for addressing energy issues and can include other energy options and subsequent challenges (increased coal mining for jobs? Increased gas/oil exploration?, etc.). Also other issues that impact these issues including what will it mean if US pulls out of climate change mitigation (Paris Accord) agreements. So a great stage to engage many and a way to bring the reality of 'wicked problems' to the forefront, and subsequently, foster critical thinking and a nonbiased approach (or an awareness of bias-filtering of information) to find reasonable and resilient solutions. Ideally, I would like to see the main Keystone event (the traditional panel session) occur before spring break so we need to get moving on this.
So now a CALL FOR LEADERSHIP TEAM VOLUNTEERS. Please email me and copy Christal if you are interested in serving on the leadership team. Ideally, we would like 2 people from each cohort currently on campus.
