Assessment of Interdisciplinary Environmental Programs

NCSE landmark 2010 report, Interdisciplinary Environmental Education on the Nation's Campuses: Elements of Field Identity and Curriculum Design, describes the findings of the first national study of interdisciplinary environmental programs.

Authored by Dr. Shirley Vincent, NCSE Director of Educational Research, the report provides an overview of the field and a framework for understanding the wide variety of interdisciplinary environmental degree programs. The report identifies ten key components of knowledge and skills for ideal environmental curricula and three broad ideal educational approaches. NCSE now offers customized consulting services, provided by Dr. Vincent, based on the findings of the study in addition to ongoing research of environmental and sustainability degree program curricula, program administrative structures, assessment and workforce alignment processes.

The NCSE is currently updating its programs' census in preparation for a new survey and study that will be launched in January 2012. Stay tuned for preliminary results of the census to be presented at the January CEDD meeting and for the survey analysis and results later in the year.
