Emergence: A newsletter of discovery, education, and outreach from the EMBRIO Institute

Issue 39: February 20, 2025

DIRECTORS’ NOTE
Plan to join us for the Institute’s all-hands seminar this coming Monday, February 24th, 3PM ET with Janice Evan’s lab leading the presentation for Thrust 1B. If you missed any previous seminars you can find the recording on our shared Box drive in the All-Hands Meetings Recordings folder<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.box.com%2Fs%2F48uqgrgoy5ygp1tsj2l3lafoy8ubgkop&data=05%7C02%7Cembrio-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7C703faa53ee2d4c34fe9008dd51e51118%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638756766458164853%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=wafihH4qtMRUdBDp3vEwzOC2GoEGgWSHi535M5GNfK0%3D&reserved=0>. The upcoming Thrust level seminar schedule is below.

Please hold on your calendars (calendar invites were sent today) the week of June 9-13 for the annual EMBRIO Summer School (Mon-Wed) and Annual Meeting (Thurs-Fri). Due to several research conferences and schedule conflicts for June and July, this is the best week available. Stay tuned for more details.

An exciting event that EMBRIO is participating in will be the Q-Bio Symposium slated for Friday, April 11th planned and hosted by the quantitative biology student committee at the University of Notre Dame, in South Bend, Indiana, including trainees in the Zartman lab. EMBRIO researchers are being invited to present research talks, and a poster session will be held. EMBRIO trainees and collaborators are encouraged to submit and present a poster. Additional details on speakers, posters, registration will be forthcoming.

As a result of changes to the NSF BII program in 2024, EMBRIO placed considerable focus the last six months on unifying our collective progress and expertise into an innovative vision for the future of the Institute. The near-term outcome of this effort resulted in successfully submitting a new funding proposal to NSF this week. Although uncertainties abound at the federal level, we will stay in communication with NSF as the review process unfolds. A huge thank you to Jeremy Zartman for his tireless commitment leading the writing effort. As Institute Co-Director with David Umulis, along with the core writers and all who provided input, reviews and feedback, we were able to shape our collective expertise into an innovative vision for the future of the Institute. This would not have been possible without you, the EMBRIO community of investigators, researchers, and trainees, who have collaborated and learned from one another to build a solid foundation of research and knowledge in these first 3.5 years.

Continuing with those thoughts, congrats to all who have submitted journal manuscripts for review and/or as preprints and have published EMBRIO research this winter (~ the last 4+ months). Check out the latest EMBRIO research findings from these Institute labs in the “Hot of the Press Publications & Preprints” section below: Glazier, Iyer-Pascuzzi, Jayant, Kim, Kinzer-Ursem, Mullins, Pienaar, Staiger, Umulis, and Zartman. Please let Brent know (laddb at purdue.edu<mailto:laddb at purdue.edu>) if we’ve missed a recent publication, preprint, or submission. Trainees and Research Staff: stay tuned for details on an EMBRIO Best Manuscript Competition.

Congratulations to Dr. Shulan Xiao on successfully defending her Ph.D. dissertation earlier this month! Shulan’s research in the Jayant lab, along with collaborating in Thrust 1, led to her work being published in Cell Reports. A last reminder to EMBRIO investigators at Purdue if you haven’t yet posted your summer intern research projects in SURF, please do so. EMBRIO will cover the faculty portion of the stipend and housing agreement. The SURF program provides an 11-week on campus research experience. Get your project posted now for consideration (details and links below).

Key Learning Outcomes:
 - How to download, install, and run CytoSim simulations on your own machine
 - An overview of the biophysical properties and dynamics of various cytoskeletal systems and their components
 - An introduction to all the features and functionalities available in CytoSim
 - Techniques and scripts for extracting and analyzing simulation data
 - Methods for performing parameter scans and running simulations on computer clusters

In the final days of the workshop, we will host hackathon sessions, where participants can apply the knowledge gained throughout the workshop to work on projects of their choosing, either independently or in groups, with the support of our instructors: François Nédélec<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.slcu.cam.ac.uk%2Fpeople%2Ffrancois-nedelec&data=05%7C02%7Cembrio-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7C703faa53ee2d4c34fe9008dd51e51118%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638756766458433188%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=6vXmTpHZqX0pg%2BddZQmExXFB1s16mqjWgy4pU6hRL9Y%3D&reserved=0>, Daniel Cortes<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcorteslab.biol.vt.edu%2F&data=05%7C02%7Cembrio-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7C703faa53ee2d4c34fe9008dd51e51118%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638756766458441144%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=KwkV492vE8v4j6A6wooy1iTPCMafct6%2BGmrzYysX9KE%3D&reserved=0> and Julio Belmonte<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbelmonte.wordpress.ncsu.edu%2F&data=05%7C02%7Cembrio-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7C703faa53ee2d4c34fe9008dd51e51118%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638756766458449318%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=krcKjLHJv40%2F6XjZQGYXFJA7CovvLfSb4GucLc7uliM%3D&reserved=0>.
