Hello Everyone,
I am pleased to let you know that following the Integrated Safety Plan (ISP) recertification meeting with REM representatives on Monday, March 1st , 2021, followed by safety inspection of selected ChE labs and corrections of identified deficiencies, our School was ISP recertified for another year. The signed, official recertification document was made available to me today.
Some of the deficiencies identified during lab inspections were: "gas cylinder stored without a cap", "open hazardous solid waste container" and "open contaminated sharps container", "unlabeled hazardous chemical container".
Reminders:
1. Gas cylinders stored in the lab (not in use) should not have a regulator attached, and must to be capped at all times. They also need to be secured in a specially designed cage/bracket and kept in place with a chain/strap that should be at about 2/3 of the cylinder height.
2. ALL hazardous waste containers, including solid waste and contaminated sharps, have to be CLOSED at all times, apart from when adding waste to the container.
3. For solid hazardous waste, including contaminates sharps, you can determine if the container is closed properly by answering this simple question: "If the container is accidentally knocked over, will the waste/sharps remain contained?" If the answer to this question is NO, then you need to seal the container in a different way, so that the answer to the question will be YES.
4. All hazardous waste container have to be labeled with the orange "Hazardous waste disposal tag" label when the first drop of chemical waste (or first solid waste/contaminated sharp) is added to the container. The label should be updated when new waste is added. Please don't mix incompatible waste streams. Solid waste needs to be collected separately from contaminated sharps. At the same time, please remember that razor blades and needles need to be collected separately from regular sharps (broken glass, pipette tips, etc.).
Thank you for your efforts in making this possible and for your sustained commitment to safety!
Sincerely,
Gabriela
on behalf of ChE Safety Committee
