[Che-student-staff-list] End of year reminders

Hello everyone,

As we are getting ready for the winter recess and the University is closing operations from December 23 at 5 pm until 8 am on January 3, 2022, I wanted to send a few timely reminders:

  1.  If your lab is also closing operations for winter recess, please double check your work area before leaving for the break and leave instruments, experimental setups, reactors, etc. in sleep mode (or unplug them), turn off gases, etc.
  2.  Keep fume hoods with the sash lowered
  3.  Do not leave water running
  4.  Switch off lights, and make sure lab doors are locked before leaving.
Each lab should have a "Shutdown SOP" that spells out the steps to follow for safely closing down the lab when this is not used for longer time; please use your own lab's Shutdown SOP as you prepare to close the lab for winter recess.

If you are around during the winter recess doing research in the lab, please remember the following:

  1.  No one should work alone in the lab - always have someone around who can assist you in case of emergency.
  2.  Wear your PPE at all times (according to what was determined during your PPE training)! The minimum required PPE to work in the lab is:
     *   Lab coat
     *   Closed toe shoes
     *   Long pants or equivalent
     *   Safety glasses/safety goggles/splash goggles - depending on the work performed. Prescription glasses are NOT accepted as PPE.
     *   Chemical resistant safety gloves if you work with hazardous chemicals
     *   Face mask (during Covid-19 pandemic)
  3.  In case of emergency, call 911 and also get in touch with your PI/supervisor.
