"Selected Topics Related to Energy and Chemicals"

Thursday, October 1, 2015
3:00 - 4:15 p.m.
FRNY G140

Reception at 2:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium

Abstract. In the presentation, some selected research programs to produce energy carriers and valuable chemicals from new or renewable sources, currently being conducted or recently completed in my group, will be discussed. These include (i) hydrogen generation for vehicle applications [1,2], (ii) catalytic upgrading of bio-oils [3,4], (iii) utilization of glycerol, a biodiesel waste product, for production of valuable chemicals [5], and (iv) oxidative coupling of methane [6].

Bio. Dr. Arvind Varma is the R. Games Slayter Distinguished Professor and Jay & Cynthia Ihlenfeld Head, School of Chemical Engineering at Purdue University. His research interests are in chemical and catalytic reaction engineering, and new energy sources. He has published over 290 archival journal research articles in these areas, co-authored three books (Mathematical Methods in Chemical Engineering, Oxford University Press, 1997; Parametric Sensitivity in Chemical Systems, Cambridge University Press, 1999; Catalyst Design: Optimal Distribution of Catalyst in Pellets, Reactors and Membranes, Cambridge University Press, 2001) and co-edited two books. He is the founding Editor (1996-present) of the Cambridge Series in Chemical Engineering, a series of textbooks and monographs published by the Cambridge University Press.
Professor Varma received his PhD degree from the University of Minnesota (1972). Prior to joining Purdue in his current position in 2004, he was at the University of Notre Dame (1975-2003) where he served as department chair during 1982-88 and as Arthur J. Schmitt Professor during 1988-2003. He has held Visiting Professorships at a number of institutions, including Caltech, Princeton, University of Wisconsin and the University of Minnesota. He is the recipient of several awards for his research and teaching, including AIChE's R. H. Wilhelm Award (1993), ASEE's Chemical Engineering Lectureship Award (2000) and AIChE's Warren K. Lewis Award (2013). He is a Fellow of AIChE, I&EC Division - ACS and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. At Purdue, he has received the Leadership Award of the College of Engineering (2011) and the Sigma Xi Faculty Research Award (2015).
