Dear Colleagues,
Jim was discharged from the hospital and returned home yesterday afternoon. Becky informs that he’s doing well - just moving slowly and Is understandably tired. His main restriction now is lifting. The biggest threat to his health now is hemorrhaging from the artery used for stent placement. Lifting could easily cause that to happen.
Like most faculty members, he’s anxious to return to work. Doctors have advised rest for at least one week and I too have advised re this strongly (rest at home until at least coming Monday) – let’s see if he can be restrained to rest, may require chains!
It looks like Jim will be up and about soon – all seems to be returning to normal, great news!

Dear Colleagues,
I received a detailed update from Becky late last evening re Jim. On Monday night, he had a poor night and they had to work to get his bleeding under control. By 9 am yesterday, his bleeding was controlled, by noon his external oxygen supply was discontinued, and he was able to eat some real food. At 3 pm they decided to move him to a step-down unit, which was huge progress. Last evening they let him walk to the bathroom and back - all the little things we take for granted when we are healthy, are big milestones when one is recouping. They are talking about discharging Jim from the hospital today, if he continues improving.
Becky thanks everyone for the support and prayers.
Let’s hope today goes as anticipated - I’ll send another update later today when I know more. It appears that the worst is behind us – superb news indeed!

Dear Colleagues,
I’m very sorry to inform that Jim had a heart attack last night. Becky was vigilant about the symptoms and took him to IU Arnett where, owing to lack of space in the cardiac unit, he’s in their ICU. He had a catheterization procedure this morning - two arteries were 100% blocked, so they put 2 stents in. He has two more arteries that are 75% blocked but they currently plan to treat those with medication.
Because of the many flu cases in the Lafayette area, they are only permitting family members to see him. I’ll keep you informed of developments as they become available.
Pl keep Jim and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Arvind
