Abstract

This presentation discusses a Fulbright-funded preliminary study on the use of multiscale plant-based fibers in 3D concrete printing, focusing on their potential reinforcing effects and internal curing properties. Micronized hemp, millimeter-sized hemp particles, and 6mm long natural fibers are incorporated into the cementitious matrix. The effects of pre-treatment with sodium hydroxide solution and silica fume slurry are studied. Printability, mechanical properties, and microstructure of the selected materials are analyzed. Future research plans are outlined to better understand the behavior of these materials and investigate their role in advancing sustainable 3D printed concrete.

Bio

Dr. Rajczakowska has obtained her master’s degree in civil engineering from Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland, and her PhD in building materials from Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. She is currently a post-doctoral researcher in the Building Materials group at Luleå University of Technology. Her work encompasses various aspects of sustainable building materials, including self-healing concrete, mechanochemical activation of recycled concrete fines, alkali-activated materials, and multifunctional concrete, including nuclear shielding properties. She has been a 2025 Fulbright Scholar at Purdue University, working with 3D printing cementitious composites. Dr Rajczakowska has authored over twenty peer-reviewed papers, serves on RILEM technical committees, and collaborates on eco-efficient infrastructure projects with Swedish industry and academia in Sweden, Poland, and Australia.
