Big Ten Academic Alliance Smithsonian Fellowship

Supports doctoral candidates who have completed all requirements except completion of a dissertation and who wish to conduct research at a Smithsonian Institution to further the development of their theses.



Application Deadline: October 15, 2025

Eligibility:

  *   Eligible research fields include: Animal behavior, ecology, and environmental science (including an emphasis on the tropics);  Anthropology (including archaeology, cultural anthropology, linguistics, and physical anthropology); Earth sciences and paleobiology; Evolutionary & systematic biology; Folklife; History of science and technology; History of art (especially American, contemporary, African, and Asian art, twentieth-century American crafts, and decorative arts); Materials research; Molecular biology; Social and cultural history of the United States
  *   Students must have completed all course work for their programs, been admitted into doctoral candidacy, and satisfied all requirements except completion of the dissertation by the time appointment begins
  *   Expected to spend most of the tenure of the fellowship in residence at a Smithsonian institution. Fellowship terms can be 3-12 months

Benefits:

  *   $45,000/year stipend (prorated for terms less than 12 months)
  *   Research allowance up to $5,000
