All:
Many of you know Ali Mostafavi (https://engineering.tamu.edu/civil/profiles/mostafavi-ali.html<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fengineering.tamu.edu%2Fcivil%2Fprofiles%2Fmostafavi-ali.html&data=05%7C02%7Ccce-faculty-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7Cb208e037e2a14c981aa008dd5b1d0878%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638766902422435724%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=MYps3NjP39aBslfckhZiHMAZqwcrPu3jdL6zkrlrwT4%3D&reserved=0>). He is being considered for an MDH (please keep this part internal to ourselves) and will be visiting us on March 05, 2025. His seminar is scheduled for 9:30 am to 10:30 am of 03/05 in HAMP G212. The title and abstract of his talk are provided below.
There will be opportunities to interact with him at the seminar, and individual or group meetings on 03/05. There will also be opportunities for dinner on 03/04, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner on 03/05. Please reach out to Diana Knecht (knecht1 at purdue.edu<mailto:knecht1 at purdue.edu>) with your availability by 4:30 pm tomorrow so that we can prepare an itinerary for him. Apologies for the short notice.
Thanks and best.

Multi-modal AI Systems for Disaster Resilient Communities
Dr. Ali Mostafavi
Professor
Director, UrbanResilience.AI Lab
Zachry Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering
Texas A & M University
(9:30 am to 10:30 am, 03/05/2025, HAMP G212)
Abstract: This talk focuses on smart resilience which is a new paradigm for harnessing community-scale big data and artificial intelligence to augment community resilience capabilities such as risk prediction, rapid impact assessment, predictive infrastructure failure monitoring and situational awareness. The big data revolution is transforming the science and practice of resilience to crises. Resilience in this context is defined as the ability of various systems (e.g., infrastructure, businesses, emergency response, and critical facilities) to maintain functionality needed for residents to reduce various social, economic, physical, and well-being impacts of floods. Data science and AI solutions could significantly augment the capabilities needed for smart flood resilience. In this talk, an overview of several studies conducted at the urbanresilience.ai<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.urbanresilience.ai%2F&data=05%7C02%7Ccce-faculty-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7Cb208e037e2a14c981aa008dd5b1d0878%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638766902422455419%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=2FRPdhTLOXhiLkVqcz9xDKgh0SDguqI63OVrT75dvzQ%3D&reserved=0> Lab will be presented in which various modes of big data such as location-based, digital trace, social media, crowdsourced, and physical sensor data have been collected and analyzed in creating machine learning and deep learning models to improve different disaster resilience capabilities.
Bio: Dr. Ali Mostafavi received his Ph.D. in Civil Eng. from Purdue University in 2013. Dr. Ali Mostafavi is a Zachry Endowed Professor of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University. He is the director of UrbanResilience.AI Lab whose research focuses on creating advanced computational models and data science algorithms to advance urban resilience to crises. His research program has led to new ways of developing computational tools and improving the understanding of resilience in complex urban systems.
