NGTS Conference held at Purdue University


Purdue University hosted the 4th Annual Conference on Next Generation Transportation Systems (NGTS-4) on September 21st and 22nd at the Purdue Discovery Park District in West Lafayette, Indiana.

The conference, themed “The Future of Travel – Leveraging AI and Advanced Analytics,” had a hybrid format (in-person and virtual), and brought together researchers, professionals, and experts in the transportation industry to share their knowledge and ideas related to the theme.

Study on steel bridges receives 2024 TPF Excellence Award

HBCU Conference hosted by Lyles School of Civil and Construction Engineering held at Purdue University



The Center for Connected and Automated Transportation (CCAT), centered at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, organized its 3rd annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) conference held on September 27, 2024 at Purdue University's Discovery Park District in West Lafayette, Indiana.

The conference, themed “Technology solutions for a future of sustainable mobility,” brought together student researchers from 4 HBCUs – Benedict College, Bowie State University, Central State University, and Prairie View A&M University – to share their knowledge and ideas in various subject areas related to the conference theme.

$1.68 million from NSF granted to "ECO-CBET: Integrated Biochemical and Physicochemical Process to Recover Critical Metals from Municipal Solid Waste in Landfills" for collaborative research


We have been throwing away treasure, according to Purdue EEE/ABE Professor Caitlin Proctor.

Proctor is a part of a collaborative research group looking to recover critical metals from landfills. Headed by Purdue EEE/CE Professor, Amisha Shah<https://maillinks.purdue.edu/t/46867325/1324168264/103158415/0/116787/?x=5253aea1>, this project collaborates with researchers from Columbia University<https://maillinks.purdue.edu/t/46867325/1324168264/103158416/0/116787/?x=9e5d368b>, Lafayette College<https://maillinks.purdue.edu/t/46867325/1324168264/103158417/0/116787/?x=82f79291>, as well as other Purdue researchers like Proctor and EEE/CE Professor Inez Hua. A key aspect of the investigation is using water to collect and recycle precious materials.

The annual award honors 38 Purdue Engineering alumni who are 38 years old and younger and have demonstrated an accelerated trajectory of professional success and made a significantly high impact in their field, organization, community or society as measured in units relative to their work.

Toxic chemicals from Ohio train derailment lingered in buildings for months – here’s what our investigation found in East Palestine


In a new study released on the aftermath of the train derailment disaster in East Palestine, Ohio, Professor Andrew Whelton describes the extent of the contamination, along with problems with the response and cleanup that, in some cases, increased the chances that people would be exposed to hazardous chemicals. It offers important lessons to better protect communities in the future.

Kike Garzon-Sabogal wins poster competition at 5th International Symposium on Geomechanics


PhD student Kike Garzon-Sabogal tied for first place from a field of approximately 70 entries in the poster competition at the 5th International Symposium on Geomechanics from Micro to Macro held September 23-27 in Grenoble, France. IS-Grenoble 2024 is the fifth quadrennial international symposium organized under the auspices of Technical Committee 105 (Geomechanics from Micro to Macro) of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).

Concrete sensor manufacturer Wavelogix receives $1M grant from National Science Foundation


Wavelogix, a manufacturer of novel, patented concrete strength sensors invented by Luna Lu, Reilly Professor of Civil Engineering and Wavelogix's founder, has received a $999,910 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II grant from the National Science Foundation.

Rao "G.S." Govindaraju receives AIH's 2024 Charles V. Theis Award for Groundwater



Rao "G.S." Govindaraju, Bowen Engineering Head of Civil and Construction Engineering and Christopher B. and Susan S. Burke Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering, has been recognized by the American Institute of Hydrology with the Charles Vernon (C.V.) Theis Award for Groundwater.

The Charles Vernon (C.V.) Theis Award was established in 1986 to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions in groundwater hydrology. Charles V. Theis graduated with a PhD from the University of Cincinnati in June 1929 and made numerous contributions to the field of groundwater science throughout his life.
