Birck Nanotechnology Center PM Shut Down Notice: October 19th - 23rd, 2020
The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a semi-annual preventive maintenance and service shutdown October 19 through October 23, 2020. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, October 19 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 23. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well.
All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. Only authorized personnel will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period.
In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, October 19 through 4 p.m. Friday, October 23. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period.
It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, October 23. Please check iLabs for equipment status and availability.
For long term research planning please refer the following future dates for our future preventive maintenance shutdowns.
Week of May 3, 2021 Week of Oct 18, 2021
Week of May 2, 2022 Week of Oct 17, 2022
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during these important preventive maintenance shutdowns. Please contact me if you need more detailed information.

Reminders for COVID Safety
The Birck center is being used much more recently due to our labs and cleanroom being opened under the new SOP restrictions. It's great to see our user community back doing leading-edge research once again!
Just a reminder that we're now operating under these COVID protocols:
1. Maintain at least 6' spacing between yourself and all others
2. Wear a face mask at all times when in public places within our building
3. Honor the hallway directional arrows
4. Frequently use hand sanitizer from the dispensers located throughout the building
5. Restrict cleanroom air shower use to one person at a time
6. Restrict cleanroom gowning room occupancy to 3 persons at a time
7. Honor the staff-only hours of 6:00 am - 10:00 am on weekdays
8. Use enhanced PPE when training, including face shields in the cleanroom
If we each do our part we are maximizing the chance to keep COVID exposures very low. Thanks for your great support and cooperation during these pandemic times!
Please let me know if you have any questions at all.
Thanks,
Ron
Gaining Access to Birck, Labs, and Cleanroom
As a reminder as we ramp back up we have additional protocols to follow in this COVID-19 era. Users who need access only to the Birck building may contact Ron who will provide our Building SOP. Once this is reviewed then we can reinstate your badge for building access. Users who want to work in any of our labs must also have an SOP review with the specific Point of Contact for that lab, and then sign the SOP stating they will follow the safety requirements of the lab. Users who need cleanroom access must review the cleanroom SOP and sign a page stating compliance with the safety rules for the cleanroom. If you need to know who the specific POC for a lab is, or if you need to get cleanroom access, please contact Ron.

Electron Microscopy Core Training Sessions
We are currently scheduling all our future training sessions. If you have requested training for a BNC EM instrument through Ilab, you will receive an email this week to look for the best date to schedule your training sessions, we will start with users that requested their training on the shut-down.
If you have an urgent need, contact us, we are open to accommodate our schedules so you can achieve your goals on-time.
If you have members in your research group interested or looking into training, service, or assistance, please let us know as well, so we can consider everyone on time for the upcoming semester.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Applications
[cid:image001.jpg at 01D67A01.CFC860E0]
Call for Postdoctoral Fellows (Flyer Attached)
Deadline: November 1, 2020
KIC POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS are high-profile, two to three year postdoctoral positions with significant independence and resources. The KIC Fellows program is designed to attract the best and brightest young researchers in nanoscale science to Cornell, and previous KIC Fellows have gone on to professorships at major universities around the world. Fellows will work in partnership with Cornell faculty sponsors on projects consistent with the KIC mission. Funds for expendables and travel will be available.
Applications will be judged on the qualifications of the candidate, the quality and originality of the proposed research, and its suitability to the KIC mission. Approximately three fellowships will be awarded per year. All Fellows agree to put the KIC byline on all publications and presentations during their appointment.
KIC Fellows will also receive lifetime membership in the Society of Cornell Fellows, along with the participants in other named prestigious and competitively awarded Cornell postdoctoral fellowships.
A KIC FELLOW APPLICATION must have at least two Cornell faculty sponsors, as well as the pre-approval of a KIC executive committee member (Paul McEuen, David Muller, Grace Xing, Dan Ralph, Hector Abruna or Abe Stroock.) The KIC executive committee member need not be a sponsor, but he/she will play a role in overseeing the Fellow's progress and helping to integrate them into the activities of KIC.
Please forward all materials (pdf format preferred) to: kicnano at cornell.edu<mailto:kicnano at cornell.edu>
DEADLINE FOR ALL MATERIALS IS NOVEMBER 01, 2020
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
1. CV, including publication list.
2. One-page description of proposed research. The proposal should have a major component developing or utilizing next-generation tools for imaging/control at the nanoscale. Names of the Cornell faculty sponsors, including the KIC executive committee member, must be listed at the top of the proposal. Applicants must consult with their Cornell faculty sponsors before submitting any materials.
3. Letters of support from Cornell sponsors. A single letter cosigned by multiple sponsors is acceptable.
4. Two additional general Letters of Recommendation (e.g., from thesis advisor, collaborators).
