Dear BNC faculty,

The Birck Nanotechnology Center is hosting the 4th Annual NanoDays event on April 25-26th, 2013 and I encourage you and your students to actively participate in the largest Nanoscale Science and Engineering outreach event of the year! We typically have more than 1000 students and This provides a unique opportunity to closely interact with K-12 educators, students and the community through hands-on activities and demonstrations. Most NSF grants require an educational outreach component. I encourage you to take this opportunity to share your research and meet your educational goals over a two day period in your own Center. Please encourage your students (computational, theoretical and experimental) to volunteer their time!

How Can Faculty Participate? Contact Jaime Turner (jjturner at purdue.edu<mailto:jjturner at purdue.edu>) by March 8, 2013 to reserve your table. Provide her the following information:

1. Faculty Name

2. Home Department

3. Are you NSF/Grant funded to do K-12 outreach? If yes, was NanoDays specifically used to acquire your funding?

4. Name of Demonstration/Hands-on Activity?

5. Specific Needs that will determine your table location in the Center: Water, White board, electricity, sink, limited lighting/Dark room, etc.

6. Will you be providing your own activity and/or Demonstration supplies? If not, you are welcome to select one of our pre-existing NanoDays Activities off our list.

Responsibilities of Participation:

1. Faculty provided a table for the event, will be required to man the table with your graduate students for the full day. You do not need to sign up for both days, but it is highly recommended!

a. Wednesday, April 23---6-8pm [Special event for Girl Scouts and their families!]

b. Thursday, April 24th---9-3pm

c. Friday, April 25th----9-1pm

2. Volunteers: Faculty and/or their graduate students that will man the table are all required to sign up to volunteer. This ensures all our volunteers are accounted for, receive shirts and are provided a continental breakfast or lunch. Sign up to Volunteer at www.nano.purdue.edu/nanodays<http://www.nano.purdue.edu/nanodays>

3. Activity supplies: Faculty are expected to use any grant funds to support their hands-on activity or demonstrations. If you are not funded at this time, the Nanodays staff has several activities available for you and your students to use for the event.

4. Set up and clean-up: Faculty and/or their students should set up and break down their activity station.

Why Participate?

1. Work with other faculty and NanoDays staff to enhance the educational experience of k-12 educators, students, community members and volunteers.

2. Receive a NanoDays final report with all the statistics to assist future funding opportunities.

3. Receive fantastic photos from the event to include in future proposals/website to highlight the outreach activities.

If you have any questions regarding your participation, please contact Jaime Turner.
Thanks a lot for your time.

Best regards,

Ali Shakouri
