Title: Co-design towards exotic spin-based systems and devices

Abstract: Magnetic materials have long been used for magnetic storage applications, driven primarily by their property that each spin influences the spin nearby to create stable long-range structures that can store information. However, in presence of high degree of fluctuations, either thermal or the quantum zero-point motion, these magnets can produce states of matter which can be highly exotic. In this talk, I describe some ongoing endeavours in the fascinating world of quantum magnetism, especially 2D quantum magnets. These are states where the alignment and the motion of the spins define the phase of matter. The topology of the motion can give rise to exotic quasiparticles and anyonic statistics. How do we detect such exotic motion of spins deep inside the Mott insulating state where conventional transport isn't an option? Can we think of using these exotic magnets for future devices, or perhaps to benchmark future quantum computers and devices? In this seminar, I will discuss ideas which the community can pursue in the future on such topics.

Bio: Arnab Banerjee is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the Purdue University starting in January 2020. He also holds a position at the Quantum Computing Institute at the ORNL as a Guest Scientist. He obtained Bachelors and Masters from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He completed to Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in Physics as a Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar fellow working with Prof. Thomas Rosenbaum on the dissertation "Classical and Quantum Phase Transitions Revealed using X-ray and transport". He joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for his post-doctoral fellowship where he pioneered the discovery of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid state - a new quantum phase of matter. From 2017 - 2019 he served as a scientist at ORNL working on both neutron scattering, thermal transport and quantum computing. He has been awarded the Director's Award, the highest award at ORNL, the MRS postdoctoral award, and top science achievement of the year award by the Discovery magazine in 2017 for this work.
