Steve,

I appreciate very much sharing your thoughts and concerns.
We have been working with a group of faculty and staff for more than a year to prepare an experiential conference worth the name Purdue 2050. This ranges from faculty in Art modifying the interior design of the Honors Hall, bringing unique exhibits, installing cameras and special hardware and software for real-time facial impression video analytics, bringing diverse speakers from around the world, to special 2050 meals prepared by the Purdue chef.

We have asked for a nominal registration fee to cover a small fraction of the cost of the conference and its logistics (15-20%). The rest is covered by President’s 150th anniversary funds and Discovery Park. Also, since seating is limited, this helps to prioritize those who are committed to come rather than those who register and don’t show up. I know that there are conflicts for classes, etc. but even if you can attend one session and 1 or 2 meals, this is still a good bargain! I certainly don’t want to penalize faculty who don’t have discretionary funds. Just let me know and I will be glad to cover it from my discretionary account.

Finally about students, different units can sponsor certain number of their students to lower the barrier (e.g. Krannert and Birck are doing that).

All of us can get blind sided and I may be missing something. I look forward to hear if you or other colleagues have any suggestions or comments.

Thanks in advance for your support.
Best regards,
Ali

Ali, I’ll be at the lunch with Anna Ridler. Sounds quite interesting.

I was thinking about attending the Purdue 2050 conference as some of the topics are of interest to me. But did you know that it costs $100 for faculty to attend and $40 for students to attend? Considering I’ll be teaching and having other non-moveable meetings during the conference, I can’t justify the expense. I thought the idea with the Purdue 150 events was that they were supposed to be free or at a nominal cost. I could find the $100 but don’t feel it’s worth it given I’ll just be able to attend part of it. Pretty much all of Liberal Arts won’t be able to attend because they don’t typically have discretionary accounts like we do. They can typically only attend conferences at which they present.

Subject: [Bnc-faculty-all-list] Lunch with Anna Ridler; Purdue 2050: Conference of the Future

Dear Colleagues,

Anna Ridler is an artist from London who has an exhibit at Ringel Gallery at Stewart Center on Art and Artificial Intelligence. Anna has been using quantum and machine learning concepts in her art (see http://annaridler.com/). We are hosting Anna and Sorin Matei (Associate Dean at College of Liberal Arts) at the Birck Center on Wednesday Sept. 25, 12noon-1pm (lunch provided). This could be a good opportunity to interact with Birck researchers. Please let Jaime know if you are able to attend the lunch.

Also I encourage you to register for the Purdue 2050 Conference if you haven’t done so already (see the details below). Anna will give a talk at the conference and you also have an opportunity to have an immersive experience in a Purdue conference in the future!

Have a good weekend.
Best,
Ali

Subject: Registration for Purdue 2050: Conference of the Future

Dear BNC Colleagues,

I would like to invite you to participate at “Purdue 2050: Conference of the Future” as part of Purdue University’s 150th anniversary on September 26-27, 2019.

This is an ‘uncommon conference’ where participants will have an immersive experience in futuristic technology that should appear in 2030 to 2050. The primary objective is to organize a conference, as it would happen in the future. The conference will include a series of sessions designed to explore emerging technologies through the lens of critical issues such as privacy and community development. Sessions include:

  * Future of healthcare. Featuring Peter Embi, president of Regenstrief Institute, healthcare professionals (Burns -CSO Cerner and Chopra -CEO RadiantHeart), a leading cancer researcher (Matei) and her patient (Gubar), a well-known IU author and cancer survivor,
  * Supriyo Datta, will introduce Quantum Technologies to general public as taught in 2050.
  * Deborah Wince-Smith, President and CEO of the Council on Competitiveness will talk about Age of Illumination and some parallels with historical development in Renaissance.
  * Talks on Future of Manufacturing and Factories by Michael King, President of LHP Data Analytics and IoT Solutions, as well as Jan-Anders Mansson co-director of IMI (Indiana Manufacturing Institute).
  * Keynote talk on Digital Privacy by Alessandro Acquisti, a well known social scientist from Carnegie Mellon University
  * Talks on Smart Affordable Housing by Gary Hobbs (BWI) and on Discovery Park District 2050 by David Broecker
  * Presentations by Anna Ridler, an artist from London, who has an exhibit at Purdue Galleries on Art and Artificial Intelligence; as well as Purdue’s Anne Fliotsos on International Telepresence Theatre
  * Student Design Competition focused on Data and Business Analytics in collaboration with Krannert School of Management

The conference room of the future at Honors Hall is designed in collaboration with Purdue’s Department of Art and Design. Students from Jan Allebach’s group will demonstrate video analytics of participants' facial expressions. This will provide real-time feedback to the speakers and audience, helping evaluate how new ideas are received.

Exhibitions include Digital Borneo, immersive sounds from 100 million years old rainforest prepared in collaboration between Bryan Pijanowski’s Center for Soundscape Engineering and the newly developed transparent and flexible speakers fabricated by Miko Cakmak’s group at the Birck Center; Plasmonic Kaleidoscope/ Mandalas -a collaboration between Sasha Boltasseva’s nanophotonics researchers and a local artist, etc. Finally, Purdue Chef has designed a Special 2050 Menu for each of the meals. This won’t be a standard conference food!

I hope you’ll join us on September 26-27. Registration is required; the cost is $40 for students, $100 for staff/faculty and $200 for outside participants. If you have special guests from outside Purdue, please let Pankaj Sharma know. We have a limited number of discounts at staff rates. Please register, no later than Sept. 18th. More information may be found at https://www.purdue.edu/dp/2050.

Best regards,
Ali
