Reminder: Registration open for DOE Energy Frontier Research Center Competition Workshop
Discovery Park will host a workshop for Purdue faculty and staff to help shape responses to the next Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRC) competition planned for fall 2019. This free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 10) in the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, Room 121.
EFRCs are multi-investigator, multidisciplinary centers that support fundamental research aimed at overcoming barriers to the development of new energy technologies and accelerating use-driven research to address energy needs. This fall, DOE plans to release a $40 million funding opportunity announcement to compete EFRCs with resources allocated to fund between six and 15 new EFRCs in the following three priority research areas:
Quantum information science: The current EFRCs are focused on quantum materials, and DOE would like to fund new centers that have an expanded scope in materials research and chemistry to address a broader set of issues in quantum information science. David Stewart, managing director of the Purdue Quantum Science and Engineering Institute, will be the resource and lead for this area.
Microelectronics: This is a new topic area focused on advanced materials and chemistry to develop next generation’s microelectronics technologies for applications relevant to DOE’s mission, including computing, power grid management and science facility workloads. Zhihong Chen, professor of electrical and computer engineering and associate director for research at Birck Nanotechnology Center, will be the resource and lead for this area.
The energy-water nexus: The water security grand challenge is a top priority for U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry, and this research area helps advance fundamental knowledge in a broad set of DOE mission areas. Lynne Dahmen, managing director of the Center for the Environment, will be the resource and lead for this area.
The workshop will include an overview of other near-term funding opportunities from DOE’s Basic Energy Sciences (BES) program. These funding opportunities range in various research areas including artificial intelligence, materials and chemical science, geosciences and biosciences.
