  * Direct physical milling of thin and thick films using argon atoms.
  * Water-cooled rotating sample carrier can be oriented 0-90 degrees from normal beam incidence.
  * Secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS) mounted on the system can be used for manual or automatic endpoint detection (EPD)

Other Capabilities:

* Ion beam source : inductively-coupled argon plasma, accelerated up to 900 V in a 14cm broad beam with currents up to 620 mA (Kaufman & Robinson, Inc.).

* Ar+ ions neutralized using a matched electron beam current before reaching the sample.

* Sample load-lock system saves time with processing

Being Good BNC Citizens

All of us would love to work in a clean and tidy lab. Being a good user and keeping others in mind makes this happen.

[cid:image007.png at 01D73AB6.EEECE380]

Here is what BNC wiki page<https://wiki.itap.purdue.edu/display/BNCWiki/Lab+Policies+and+Best+Practices#LabPoliciesandBestPractices-LabCitizenship> tells us.

If the bottles in the hood are empty, refill them from a supply bottle. It is in the cabinet below the hood. (if not it can be taken from the storage cabinet)

Label the chemicals, samples, or glassware that left unattended, with "researcher name_Major constituents of material_Date of Disposal/ return"

  * Clean the workspace (fume hood, lab bench or equipment) after use, with
  * any chemicals on the hood surface wiped up or rinsed,
  *   used cleanroom wipes removed
  *   all aluminum foil removed
  * any glassware containing chemicals labeled and pushed to the back of the hood
  *   any empty glassware removed
  * and chemical supply bottles returned to the proper storage cabinet ("Corrosives" for concentrated acids/bases or "Flammable" for solvents/developers).

Together, we make the clean room clean and nano bigger.

A kind reminder about the upcoming cleanroom shutdown: chemical processing should be completed by 6:00 am on Monday, May 3. And remove all glassware from the hoods.

NSAC

Birck Nanotechnology Center PM Closure Notice

The Birck Nanotechnology Center will be undergoing a semi-annual preventive maintenance and service shutdown May 3 through May 7, 2021. Air handling systems, exhaust systems, toxic gas delivery, and monitoring systems will be down beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, May 3 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 7. The BNC staff will be performing appropriate preventive maintenance on the process equipment at this time as well.

All CLEANROOM research work will be suspended until the maintenance activities are completed and all systems are returned to normal. Only authorized personnel will be allowed to enter the cleanroom during this time period.

In addition, the laboratory areas will also be affected by this systems maintenance. As such, all LABORATORY activities that involve exhausted hoods, vacuum systems, and/or toxic gas systems will be down beginning 7 a.m. Monday, May 3 through 4 p.m. Friday, May 7. However, work that involves taking standard electrical measurements may be carried out in the LABS provided that fluctuating air temperature and humidity do not affect the readings. No chemical work will be allowed during this period.

It is anticipated that the building and process tool maintenance will be completed by the end of the day on Friday, May 7. Please check iLabs for equipment status and availability.
For long term research planning please refer the following future dates for our future preventive maintenance shutdowns.

Week of May 3, 2021 Week of Oct 18, 2021
Week of May 2, 2022 Week of Oct 17, 2022

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during these important preventive maintenance shutdowns. Please contact me if you need more detailed information.

Mark Voorhis
Building Manager
Birck Nanotechnology Center

Notice Regarding Fume Hood Purge

As a reminder, during our twice per year building PM shutdown we also address maintenance and cleaning issues on process equipment, including the fume hoods. With the upcoming building shutdown the week of May 3 we are planning our normal fume hood cleans and purges. Please note that all fume hoods in the cleanroom will be cleaned and emptied during the week of May 3 so please make sure you have completed all your chemical processes by Monday morning, May 3, at 6:00 am. The hoods will be cleaned and glassware will be taken out beginning Monday morning at 7:00 am. You should store your empty glassware in your totes on the tote storage racks.
Thanks for your attention to this.

Ron Reger
Engineering Manager
