Seminars/Workshops

A half-day "Birck Research Symposium" (featuring staff scientists) on Sept 19 Wed from 8:00am to 1:30pm (tentative location: BRK 1001, reserved).

Speakers will include all of our staff scientists (Dima, Alex, Rosa, Nithin, Neil, Nick, Yi ) and Tim (for 3D cell culture lab) to each give a 30-min invited talk (24-min presentation + 6 min Q&A) at this symposium. The 24-min presentation (perhaps ~20-30 slides or so) will include ~12 min overview of the corresponding "Birck service" --- lab facilities/capabilities/type of services or processes provided, followed by (~12 min) some examples/highlights of research work ("science") done by the staff scientist and supported users (faculty groups) using the facilities or services. In some cases such as the upcoming Themis TEM, it may include examples (elsewhere) of the kind of research/science that can be enabled by such facilities that we may expect to see in near future.

The talks will be recorded by nanoHub and (along with slides) put on Birck website to be viewed by people who may not make to the symposium as well as to show case our capabilities to attract more users (both from campus as well as outside Purdue).

A short panel discussion including all speakers are also planned at the end of the symposium. Coffee and Lunch may be provided.

Cleanroom Users,
An inordinate amount of small photoresist bottle have accumulated under the hoods. In an effort to remove those no longer needed please place an adhesive label "F" on the top of the container by July 23rd.
All unlabeled containers will be removed and disposed of. This will free up a significant amount of needed storage.
Thank you,
Stephen
Birck Safety Officer

Post-Doctoral Researcher Positions in the OxideMEMS Lab at Purdue University

Professor Sunil Bhave has openings for Post-Doctoral Researchers in his OxideMEMS Lab (https://engineering.purdue.edu/oxidemems/) at Purdue University. The positions are available beginning NOW for 2 years.
Projects currently under investigation in the lab waiting for qualified Post-Docs to have immediate impact include:

1. Quantum Repeater - investigate bi-directional coupling between resonator and color centers in carbide for information transfer between computing qubits and flying qubits
2. Solid-State Angle Sensor - implement mechanically-driven dynamical decoupling to enhance coherence time and measure precession of spins in diamond color centers
3. Multimorphic Tuner - fabricate bilayer transducers for efficient mechanical control of magnetic films for an octave-spanning microwave tuner
4. Oscillator - design long-term stable, vibration insensitive, single crystal piezoelectric oscillator with self-aligned electrodes
5. Mechanical Reservoir - engineer opto-mechanical dipole trap that interfaces ultracold atoms with defect qubits.

The candidates need to have hands-on experience with MEMS fabrication including photolithography, film deposition, reactive ion etching, and fab-related metrology. Knowledge of non-linearity, piezoelectric materials, resonators, microwave testing, opto-mechanics, quantum mechanics and circuit design is a plus. The researchers will interact with a broader team of collaborators in academia and industry and supervise graduate students.
The research will be performed at the Birck Nanotechnology Center, a class 100 clean-room which contains recently purchased equipment including a new fast-write JEOL 8100 ebeam and an AJA Ion Mill with end-point detection specifically geared towards the projects above.
Interested MEMS innovators should contact Sunil at bhave at purdue.edu.

Aspire Four Week Look Ahead Schedule

Attached is the Aspire Four Week Look Ahead Schedule. It is the projection of vibration and/or noise issues with the construction outside of Birck.
