JEOL Update
The installation of the JEOL 8100FS is progressing without any problems. This week the system had the electronics tank charged with SF6. Small adjustments have been made to get the correct gas volume and pressure. The vacuum system has been completed and is running. The system has a variable speed vacuum pump that changes speed according to demand. The 100kV power cable has been run from the electronics tank to the column. The system is now conditioning the electronics and gun. It is at 43kV right now. They are hoping that sometime tomorrow we will have a beam coming down the column. They have been doing stage tests and loading/unloading cassettes.

Data Science Forums

As many of you know, Purdue recently announced a new, campus-wide data science initiative, supported by the Office of the Provost, the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships and Discovery Park. As part of this new initiative, we are holding three data science forums<http://www.purdue.edu/newsroom/purduetoday/releases/2017/Q3/office-of-the-provost-and-discovery-park-to-host-data-science-forums.html> in the coming weeks to discuss current efforts across campus, with the goal of developing a set of strategic approaches that will position the University as a leader in the field. This joint initiative will prepare students to engage in an increasingly data-driven world, empower our faculty to create and shape the data science research ecosystem at Purdue and to identify and engage with strategic partners.

Our faculty will be key players in these open discussions, which will shape this new initiative. Please join us for one of the following sessions:

· Oct. 13 (F) -- 3-5 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 310.

· Oct. 31 (T) -- 3-5 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 310.

Those interested in attending one or more sessions can register now through our event page: https://purdue-data-science.eventbrite.com.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Cheers,

Tomas
