The BNC Monday Memo] BNC News *week of August 31, 2009 * ANNOUNCEMENTS

*Semi-annual Preventive Maintenance Shutdown*: The Birck Nanotechnology
Center building and process tools will all be undergoing preventive
maintenance and service during the week of October 5th, 2009. The cleanroom
will be closed beginning 7:00 AM Tuesday, October 6, 2009, and is expected
to reopen late Wednesday or early Thursday. In addition starting 7:00 AM on
Thursday October 7, 2009, no laboratory work involving exhausted hoods,
biosafety cabinets or enclosures, vacuum systems, and/or gas systems can be
performed. Laboratories are expected to reopen late Thursday evening or
early Friday. Electrical measurements may be performed if they are not
affected by significant temperature excursions in the room. The
metallization systems require more extensive PM and cleaning so they will be
taken off-line beginning Monday, October 5th and will be brought back
on-line as the PMs are completed. The plasma etch systems, also requiring
more extensive work, will be taken off-line on Tuesday and brought back
on-line by Friday afternoon. As we work through this important PM activity,
please continue to check Coral for tool status and availability.

Additional shutdown specifics will be communicated once final details are
arranged. — John R. Weaver <jrweaver at purdue.edu>

*PRINTER UPDATE!* Toshiba printers to be installed. One is already installed
in BRK 1222 and will be ready for printing sometime next week. Two
additional printers will also be added sometime next week, in BRK 1022 and
BRK 2020. We will be assigning printer codes to faculty for their group's
use. An e-mail will arrive next week, too. We will set up several times for
training opportunities

.

*Kudos! SURESH GARIMELLA* has been selected to receive the initial Allan
Kraus Thermal Management Medal "for fundamental scholarly contributions to
thermal management as reflected by his extensively cited publication
records, mentorship of a large, diverse graduate student cohort, direct
industrial impact of his NSF Center on cooling technologies, and unflagging
service to the profession." ASME <http://www.asme.org/>

*NSAC NEWS*

The Nanotechnology Student Advisory Council (*NSAC*) is comprised of
graduate students and research assistants working at the Birck
Nanotechnology Center in Purdue University. However, membership is not
exclusive and any Purdue student is welcome.

Our goal is to promote collaboration, enhance research awareness, and
facilitate communication among faculty, staff, and students. To meet this
goal, we plan regular social events, host lab open houses, and collaborate
with the staff to organize the Equipment & Process Expert (Super-User)
Program. We also have student volunteers that serve on the Policies and
Procedures Committee for BNC.

Please feel free to visit the
NSAC<http://www.purdue.edu/discoverypark/nanotechnology/resources/nsac/index.php>web
page!
