ANNOUNCEMENTS
PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE SHUT DOWN: The cleanroom will be closed beginning 7:30 AM Tuesday, May 5, 2008, and is expected to reopen late Wednesday [May 6] or early Thursday [May 7].
Also, the office, labs, and public areas will be affected on Wednesday,
May 6. Significant temperature (55°) and humidity excursions should be
expected during the day. In addition, on Thursday May 7 no laboratory work involving exhausted hoods, biosafety cabinets or
enclosures, vacuum systems, and/or gas systems can be performed during
that time period. Electrical measurements may be performed if they are
not affected by significant temperature excursions in the room. [Details]

CONFERENCE ROOM USAGE: The
use of the conference rooms at BNC for formal and informal meetings at
all hours is encouraged. For this reason, the conference rooms are
left unlocked during the night. We certainly hope that we can continue
this practice in the future, but currently we have an abuse problem
with one conference room in particular.
It is inappropriate to move
the upholstered furniture from the public areas of the facility into
the conference rooms, but a couch has, on several occasions, been moved
into BNC 1201. This practice must stop. [More]

Kudos! Birck Nanotechnology Center's 2009 Annual Research Review presented its POSTER AWARD to the group consisting of Isaac
Wildeson, Robert Colby, Dave Ewoldt, Zhiwen Liang, Mark Oliver, Dmitri
Zakharov, Jeremy Schroeder, Patrick Cantwell, R. Edwin Garcia, Eric
Stach, and Timothy Sands for their poster entitled "Low-Cost
Substrates for High-Performance Nanorod Array LEDs." The award is $300
(plus a gross-up to cover taxes).

HONORABLE MENTION goes to two teams that tied for second place: Ryan Wagner, Arvind Raman, and Robert Moon, "Cellulose Nanocrystals: Green Nanotechnology"; and Jonathan Claussen, Tim Fisher, and Marshall Porterfield, "Gold Nanocube-Augmented Carbon Nanotube Networks as Electrochemical
Biosensors." The next Research Review will be held Thursday, 8 April
2010. Perhaps your poster will take the prize next year!

KUDOS! Kyle Montgomery, PhD student, Electrical Engineering, was awarded the 2009 SMART Scholarship, which is a multi-year fellowship. Kyle is being sponsored by the Air
Force Research Lab - Space Vehicles Directorate, and will be working
with the space power group at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM. Way to
go, Kyle!
