Windows Network Places: Missing Computers

Summary

When you browse the network via Network Neighborhood, some computers may fail to appear.  The problem occurs when a computer on the same subnet has elected itself to be the master browser, but for some reason it is not serving the full workstation list for the domain.

Solution

In order to fix this problem you will need to use the BROWSTAT command which can be found in the \\ohare.ecn.purdue.edu\public\tools\usr\sbin directory. To fix the problem, perform the following steps:

  1. Login to any machine on the problem subnet.
  2. Start a command prompt.
  3. Run BROWSTAT GM 1 ECN.  This will report the name of the machine which is acting as the master browser for the current machines subnet.
  4. Once you have the master browser name, go to the machine acting as the master browser and verify that its WINS settings are set properly.  They should be set to the IP addresses for BLUEMOON and DEGAULLE, respectively.
  5. Once you have verified the WINS settings, reboot the machine.
  6. Wait approximately 5 minutes and then check Network Neighborhood to see if your machines are showing up again.

If performing the above steps does not result in a solution to the problem, repeat the steps one more time.  If the problem still persists, send mail to info-nt@ecn.purdue.edu.
