Student employees have always filled a special role at the Engineering Computer Network. Students extend the amount of work that the full time staff can accomplish, and the students also get specialized training by working as part of the network team. ECN believes in "growing a staff," meaning that often times when students work part-time for ECN while going to school and show an aptitude for the sort of computing that ECN requires, ECN tries to entice them to stay on full-time after graduation.

Historically speaking, hiring people from outside Purdue with the skills necessary to keep this gigantic network working has been difficult. Students who work for ECN while they are in school are very well trained and have experiences they cannot get anywhere else. Working for ECN not only prepares students technically, but they also develop interpersonal skills and gain experience working as part of a large team as well.
