Janet Qubain

Alumna
BSEE '79

I think it is helpful to know what type of work you want to do, but enjoy the ride!

Why did you choose to study electrical and computer engineering?

I liked math and science in high school so my guidance counselor thought that meant nursing (for a female). A Purdue representative spoke in my senior physics class about engineering and I thought that looked more interesting.

Favorite Purdue ECE class or experience:

The class was “EE495 Intro to Computer Engineering.” I think it was an “experimental” class at the time!

How did your Purdue degree help you achieve your goals?

I was fortunate enough to work on early GPS systems, early voice air to ground communication and early texting over analog cell phone networks. I thoroughly enjoyed my engineering career!

What advice do you have for current ECE students?

I think it is helpful to know what type of work you want to do, but enjoy the ride!

What do you do in your free time?

I no longer work in the engineering field. I enjoy volunteering at a food pantry and a furnishings reuse center and spending time with my grandchildren. I love visiting my Boilermaker daughter on campus attending volleyball, football, basketball and baseball games (many more than when I was a student) and riding the Boilermaker Special!
