Managing almost 3 million pilgrims performing various Islamic religious rituals in a short duration of time during the annual pilgrim (the Hajj) in Makkah (Saudi Arabia) poses enormous safety and administrative challenges. This seminar will give an overview of research leading to the development of advanced IT solutions which can play significant role in managing pilgrims and, in general, world-wide events involving large scale crowd. IT solutions can provide high quality experience for individuals within a large crowd. In particular, research results provide detailed insight into the complex dynamics of pilgrim crowd performing the Tawaf which is to circumambulate the Kabbah, the most sacred site in Islam. We discuss the strategies how these results can lead to the development of efficient crowd management policies for a constrained infrastructure. Additional constraints include keeping intact the physical characteristics around Kabbah while deploying crowd management policies that have minimal implementation and administrative cost.
