Staff Onboarding

Welcome to Purdue ECE!

We are so glad you’ve chosen to join our school. Starting a new position can be a bit overwhelming, so we’ve tried to consolidate all the information you need in one place.

Before Arrival

  • Follow this relocation checklist for some general moving tips.
  • Register for New Employee Orientation. Faculty who aren't starting in the fall are encouraged to attend New Employee Orientation, which covers history, safety, and benefits. Faculty starting in the fall will be invited to a separate faculty onboarding that occurs yearly in August.
  • Contact ECN (esite@ecn.purdue.edu) to set up your email and BoilerKey, and inquire about computer and IT-related information, if any.
  • Contact the Facility Manager, Steve Devault, for office space and phone, and when and where to get your office keys.
  • Contact the Administrative Manager and Assistant to the Head, Karen Jurss, to schedule your first meeting with the ECE Head, Dimitrios Peroulis, and to also connect you to your administrative support person. Please notify Karen Jurss of your anticipated arrival date.
  • Contact the ECE Communications Office (akbowers@purdue.edu) to provide the following information so that you can be added to the ECE website directory and all appropriate mail lists.
    • Email address
    • Office and phone
    • Title of your position
    • Administrative area
    • Headshot (if none available, arrange to have photo taken by the Communications Office)

First day

  • Attend New Employee Orientation.
  • Meet the head of the school, Dimitrios Peroulis
  • Complete the online onboarding forms through SuccessFactors, found at OnePurdue, the first tab Employee Launchpad (SAP SuccessFactors) at the top.
  • Get a Purdue ID card (PUID).  The PUID is a 10-digit number unique to you.  The number is printed on your Purdue Photo ID and your primary identification within Purdue. This number will be issued after you are entered into the Purdue employment system.
  • If you choose to park your car anywhere on campus, you'll need to get a parking permit.

First 3 days

  • Once you get BoilerKey set up, then you need to login to OnePurdue, our employee portal. Then click on the tab of Employee Launchpad (SAP SuccessFactors) at the top. This is where you enter your important personal information, such as your name, address, and bank account for your paycheck. You can update this information whenever needed (for example, changing your address).
  • Taxes: OnePurdue's employee self service also contains important tax forms. Fill the following out as soon as possible:
    • W-4 form, for withholding. You can fill it out online, or if you prefer, paper forms are available.
    • Electronic W-2 (administered by the company ADP), which gives you quick online access to your tax statements 10 days before paper copies, without worrying about mail delivery issues.
    • International employees must complete the Glacier Arctic International Tax Compliance Summary. The employee will receive an email from support@online-tax.net with the link to access and complete his/her international tax information in the Glacier software. After completed, print the forms that the system prompts you to print. Sign and date all forms and submit them to the ECE business office.

First 7 days

  • Meet Associate Heads in areas of your interest:
    • Associate Head of Faculty Mentorship and Recognition, Amy Reibman. (Faculty mentoring, awards and recognition)
    • Associate Head of Teaching and Learning, Milind Kulkarni. (Teaching assignments, all questions related to teaching and learning)
    • Associate Head of Resource Planning and Management, Dan Jiao. (Faculty research space, Staff management, General operation)
    • Associate Head of Graduate and Professional Programs, Vijay Raghunathan. (ECE’s graduate program and graduate recruitment)
    • Associate Head of Undergraduate Programs, Babak Ziaie. (ECE’s undergraduate program)
  • Meet your administrative assistant,  (assigned by Karen Jurss), who can assist you with the following tasks:
    • getting your office set up
    • exam preparation, seating assignments, homework collection and utilizing Brightspace and other course-related software.
    • conference and journal paper editing, thesis editing and the production of manuscripts, proposals and other technical materials.
    • make travel arrangements, submit reimbursements using the Concur system
    • schedule meetings, arrange seminars and workshops
    • provide support for faculty search committees, coordinate faculty interviews, etc.
    • anything else you may need
  • Your office mailbox is located close to your office. Ask your administrative assistant for location.
  • Computers: There should be one computer ready for use in your office. Contact ECN (esite@ecn.purdue.edu) to purchase other computer equipment. Please also confirm first with the business office that your accounts are properly set up for these purchases.
  • Consider registering for a faculty development workshop, like this series of Grantsmanship Events hosted by the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships.

First month

  • The business office wants to meet with you face-to-face, so you can learn how to work with them on account information, startup, payroll, hiring procedures, purchasing, and travel. If you plan on traveling, Purdue will give you a credit card specifically for travel expenses (here's more information on the Visa Travel Card.)
  • Introduce yourself to the ECE Development Office
  • Contact Mark Johnson if you want to get to know ECE undergraduate labs, and/or would like to have access to commercial EDA tools.
  • We have general office supplies available in the building (pens, notepads, paper, etc.); just ask your administrative assistant. If you need something specific, please let your administrative assistant know and it will be ordered.
  • Benefits: if you attended the New Employee Orientation, you learned about all the benefits that HR offers, including health insurance, life insurance, retirement, and more.  Now would be a good time to select and enroll those benefits.
