Learning Outcomes

A student who successfully fulfills the course requirements will have demonstrated an ability to:

  • Analyze/design electromagnetic devices
  • Explain principles of electromagnetic energy conversion
  • Explain time-varying transformations
  • Explain/analyze DC, brushless DC, and induction machines
  • Analyze power converters for DC machines

Lecture Outline:

Lectures Major Topics
7 Magnetically coupled circuits
6 Energy conversion
3 VR stepper motors
4 DC machines
3 DC/DC power converters
5 Rotating MMF concepts
2 Reference frame theory
6 Brushless DC machines
1 Transformers
7 Induction Machines

Assessment Method:

Homework, projects, exams (subject to change). An ABET exam will be given prior to the end of the term. Students must demonstrate mastery of all objectives on this exam. The ABET exam also serves to help the student prepare for the final exam.
