Candidate:
We are looking for an excellent Research Assistant with very good background in machine vision and robotics, as well as an interest in augmented reality. A high level of programming skills is required (Python, C++). The applicant must have completed Master studies with thesis in ECE, EE, CS  prior to starting the position. The candidate is expected to start in Spring 2018, so he/she needs to apply for the position until Nov 1, 2017. It is also expected that the candidate will conduct his/her PhD research in this area of work, in the School of Industrial Engineering at Purdue.

Project:
The project is dedicated to study how to convey expertise remotely, specifically surgical expertise using AI, augmented reality and machine vision for a telementoring system.
Optimal trauma treatment integrates different surgical skills not all available in military field hospitals. Telementoring can provide missing expertise, but current systems require the trainee to frequently focus on a nearby telestrator, fail to illustrate next surgical steps, and give the mentor an incomplete picture of the ongoing surgery. We address these gaps by developing STAR – System for Telementoring with Augmented Reality.

This involves developing a framework to control a Drone and access real-time images from its camera, sending those to a mentoring station, developing communication protocols, automatic recognition of wounded soldiers; automatic segmentation and recognition of gestures (e.g. one shot learning algorithms); and programming robots with autonomous behaviors.

Information and applications:
Please send your CV, a list of publications/conferences, a representative journal or conference paper (if applicable).
