Purpose

The Sensors & Embedded Systems Research (SESR) Group in the Electrical and Electronics Systems Research (EESR) Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applications for a full-time research staff member position with expertise in the area of embedded systems hardware and software development. The SESR Group develops sensors, embedded systems and microelectronics for measurement and controls applications in order to advance science, address energy challenges, and enhance national security.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities for this position involve the development of microelectronic and embedded systems in support of ORNL/DOEs missions in science, energy, advanced manufacturing, vehicle technologies, neutron science, and other core DOE discipline areas.

Qualifications Required

- M.S. or Ph.D. degree in electrical or computer engineering

- A minimum of one year of experience with embedded system design, microprocessor-based control systems, and microcontroller software/firmware development.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors, peer reviewers, technical publications and others.

- Experience or interest in progressing involvement in program development activities including proposal writing and technical innovation/leadership.

Required skills include:

- Proficient with C/C++

- Experience with microcontroller development and associated debugging tools

- Experience with conventional wireless protocols using commercial-based hardware utilizing communications standards such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, Wifi, etc.

- Experience with conventional serial interface hardware including USB, RS-232, and RS-422.

- Experience with microcontroller interface circuits utilizing direct memory mapped, SPI or I2C communications interfaces.

- Experience with data acquisition hardware including National Instruments tools and LabView software.

- Experience with hardware/software co-design and development

- Working knowledge of common electrical engineering design tools for schematic capture (OrCAD capture) and analog circuit simulation (HSPICE, PSPICE, LTSPICE).

- Working knowledge of general laboratory equipment and use including oscilloscopes, function generators, power supplies, spectrum analyzers, etc.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.
