ILS 595--Information Strategies for Science, Technology, and Engineering Research
ILS 595--Information Strategies for Science, Technology, and Engineering Research--will be offered Spring 2019 as a 1 credit hour online course.
In this online course, students will learn advanced search strategies for key databases relevant to science, engineering, and technology disciplines. Using these strategies, students will develop a literature review on a topic of their choice and learn how to approach different types of literature reviews (e.g., systematic reviews, scoping reviews). Additionally, students will learn about scholarly information and discipline-relevant grey literature in order to prepare for future careers as researchers and authors.
Topics will included:
- Advanced database searching using Web of Science, Scopus, Engineering Village, and more.
- Utility patents and technical standards (ASTM, ISO, etc.)
- Research and personal data management
- Searching for business and industry information
- Using citation management software to track what you've read and easily incorporate it into your writing (Mendeley, Zotero, etc.)
- Presenting your research
- Systematic reviews, scoping reviews, and other types of literature reviews
- The economics of scholarly publishing
- Protecting your intellectual property as an author
