Fermilab Electrical Engineering Opening

Position Type: Professional
Priority: No
Degree Requirement: BS, MS

Engineer I (EE Support) Job Code: 000417

Department: Accelerator Division (AD)

Open Date: 05/13/2015
Close Date: 08/09/2015

Description

The Accelerator Division Electrical and Electronic Support Department works on a wide range of power systems for particle accelerators. The selected candidate will participate in the design of pulsed power systems including both modulators and their associated magnets and loads. These systems operate at voltages up to 120 kV, currents up to 100 kA and time scales from several nanoseconds to several seconds.

Responsibilities:
  • As a member of an engineering team, participate in computer simulations, design, installation, commissioning and documentation of various pulsed power electrical equipment and control systems. One example includes a 150 kJ capacitor bank at 4 kV delivering a 300 kA pulse every 1.2 seconds to focus a particle beam.  The detailed design includes specifying commercial solid state devices and capacitors and designing custom hardware to provide this pulse
  • Design equipment that utilizes analog and digital controls and high power passive and active components such as solid state, vacuum and gas switches.  One example includes controlling a custom switch-mode power converter to supply a 300 kHz sine wave to bend a particle beam.  The current has to be synchronous to the beam
  • Communicate and present designs to other members of the team
  • Write specifications and work with outside contractors and vendors
Respect, understand, and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity.

Abide by all environmental, safety, and health regulations.

Qualifications and Essential Job Functions

  • MS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience is preferred
  • BS in Electrical Engineering or Physics (if applicant has a BS in Physics must also have an MS in Electrical Engineering with an interest in the area of power electronics)
  • Experience with electronic test equipment such as voltmeters, oscilloscopes and function generators
  • Experience with analog circuit simulation software
  • Good communication skills in English, both oral and written
Relocation Assistance is not available for this position.
